P4 trip to Castleward

20th Feb 2020

P4 recently went on a trip to Castleward for the 'Pack up your troubles' program. We traveled on a bus to Castleward. When we got there Agnes came out to meet us. The boys were given school caps to wear and the girls wore berets so the children could play the role of evacuees living in the area during World War 2.

Firstly, the children learnt about 'Dig for Victory' and Agnes explained her job as a land girl during World War 2. Then the children were able to make their own plant pots out of newspaper and they planted a bean pot into soil. The children were then able to play dress up in army uniforms and play games that evacuees played during the war.

Lastly, in the kitchen Polly, the cook, talked about rationing and showed the children some of the foods she had been making from rationed ingredients.
