Building bones

7th Oct 2016

As part of our 'Special inside and out topic' we explored what the inside of our bones are like. To help us understand all the different parts of the bone we made model bones using food.

We used two pieces of sponge cake for the spongy bone and put jam and strawberry laces between them to represent the bone marrow and blood vessels. We then put biscuits on the outside of the sponge to make the hard but breakable part of the bone. The final step was to wrap the bone in a flour tortilla; this represents the periosteum which is a thin membrane that covers the bone.

Once we made the models and discussed all the different parts it was time to enjoy eating them. They were pretty tasty!
